Rock climbing trips have ended in tragedy for visitors at a national park following a fatal accident. Authorities reported that Brian Astle, a 42-year-old from Provo, Utah, fell while descending a steep climbing route on the west side of Mount Gould in Glacier National Park on July 9.
The incident happened before 6 p.m. and involved a call to Glacier National Park’s dispatch about someone who had fallen from Mount Gould, which is part of the Highline Trail. Park Rangers collaborated with Aerial Search and Rescue Teams in the search for Astle. However, surgery slated for the next day was pushed back to facilitate a safer recovery.
The following morning, searchers located Astle’s body and transported it to a nearby horse enclosure until arrangements could be made with the coroner’s office.
An ongoing investigation is underway, but details are scarce at this moment. Officials stated their condolences to the family and urged respect for their privacy during this challenging time.
Mount Gould, reaching 9,557 feet, holds the title of the highest point along the garden walls of Glacier National Park. The park has experienced similar incidents before. In one case, a climber named Grant Marcuccio from Whitefish, Montana, was reported dead after disappearing from his hiking group in August 2024. He suffered severe injuries in an evident fall.
Glacier National Park, celebrated for its stunning glacial lakes, waterfalls, valleys, and alpine meadows, is also known for its unpredictable weather, which can shift dramatically at any moment. Visitors are advised to be ready for varied conditions while exploring the expansive landscapes.
