Clint Eastwood biography returned to library 38 years late, mystery borrower avoids $6K in fees

Recently, my library received a biography written about Clint Eastwood that I borrowed about 40 years ago.

The 1983 book Clint Eastwood by Gerald Cole and Peter Williams was published in May 1986 by students attending John Bunyan Senior School (now named Bedford Academy). It was borrowed from the Central Library. The book was originally part of the city's youth library. Collection of library services.

According to staff at Bedford Central Library in the UK, a non-borrower recently found the book during a housing arrangement and returned it 13,762 days after checking out.

If the fee had not been waived, the original borrower would have been fined £4,816.70 in late fees, according to the Bedford Independent, an online newspaper based in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England. This equates to more than $6,110 in US dollars.

Bedford Central Library said: “We were very pleased to have this stranger back after almost 40 years! (It was actually an old school library book, so the fine was more than a dime a dozen.) ),” Bedford Central Library wrote on Facebook.

“Obviously hundreds of books are returned every day, but we had second thoughts about this one,” a library assistant named Anthony told The Independent.

“Despite being borrowed nearly 38 years ago, this book is actually in very good condition, and even though it was borrowed a while ago, it is unusual for a library book to be treated with such care. It’s heartwarming.”

The “Dirty Harry” star's unauthorized biography was written by a British author and published in London.

The library assistant emphasized how modern technology has made it easier to return books.

“We've made it so easy to renew your books that you won't be late returning them,” Anthony explained. “Customers can use the library app and online catalog to manage physical loans and borrow e-books and digital audiobooks. E-books and digital audiobooks are automatically retrieved from the app. So there's no need to return it.”
