A former Long Island supermarket owner is in hot water for allegedly tossing leftover food, including raw meat and produce, into a dumpster outside the closed store, leaving it to decompose for over a week. This has created a foul odor that’s troubling local residents.
The previous owners of Frank’s Fairway in North Massapequa received a violation order from the Town of Oyster Bay after neighbors reported that the smell of decaying food from the trash bins was drawing in animals.
One neighbor remarked, “I can only imagine the smell,” adding that the trash can lid was left ajar.
Frank’s Fairway shut its doors on October 13. Post-closure, employees discarded all remaining food into the trash.
The garbage went uncollected, and mold lingered for at least ten days. It’s not clear if the situation has been addressed since the violations were issued.
“It’s just wrong to leave food in a store like that,” commented neighbor Ann Spellman.
She expressed uncertainty about when any action would be taken.
The situation led to an outcry on social media from locals about the odor until the town got involved.
Several residents shared concerns that there might still be rotting food inside the store.
The Town of Oyster Bay has stated that the owners of Frank’s Fairway have been cited, with court appearances pending for two of the owners.
Details regarding the specific citations remain unclear.
Nonetheless, the owners refuted the town’s claims and local complaints, describing the citations as entirely “baseless.”
The town has assured residents that it is collaborating with the property owner and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets to manage the cleanup of the trash.
