Closure of Denny's in Southern California leaves beach community heartbroken

Denny’s in Point Loma Closes After Nearly 60 Years

A well-loved Denny’s in San Diego’s Point Loma area has shut its doors permanently, ending nearly 60 years of service. Many longtime patrons are grieving the loss of this community fixture.

Residents were caught off guard last week when they arrived at the diner on the corner of Rosecrans and Jarvis streets, only to find it closed.

“It’s been part of this community for as long as I can remember,” said Ed Baier, a longstanding local. He remarked that the Denny’s, operating since 1966, had served as a gathering spot for various generations of families.

For a lot of people, this closure signifies the end of cherished memories.

Customer Kate Yamashiro expressed her disappointment, recalling when her softball team would visit during high school. “I’m sad to see it go,” she said, reflecting on the good times spent there.

Another local shared on social media, “It’s not just about the food; it’s the memories.” They mentioned that high school marching band students often gathered at Denny’s for breakfast before competitions.

However, the closure wasn’t entirely unexpected. The property had been quietly leased since April, as indicated by a real estate brochure, and agents are actively looking for a new restaurant to fill the space.

While this Denny’s location has closed, those craving a classic diner experience can still visit the nearby Denny’s on West Point Loma Boulevard, which remains open.

This closure coincides with the chain’s broader strategy to reduce its footprint across the country, as Denny’s has announced plans to close up to 150 underperforming locations to enhance its profitability.
