Transforming Men’s Style
My work involves a variety of tasks, from photography and video production to writing stories and columns—basically, I cover style and life.
One of my roles is giving style advice to men, helping them curate a wardrobe they feel good about. It’s about clearing out the clutter in their closets—those items they never wear—and replacing them with clothes that enhance both their appearance and confidence.
For me, it’s incredibly rewarding. Many men tend to underestimate the power of clothing, which is a shame as it significantly affects our mood. The right outfit can either boost your spirits or bring you down.
Embracing Style
Is this about being “superficial”? Not at all. It’s recognizing that how we dress communicates who we are, both to ourselves and others. If you’re not satisfied with your appearance, it’s tough to feel happier in general. It truly is as straightforward as that.
Watching men shift their wardrobes over a year or two brings me a lot of joy. Especially when I see their attitudes toward fashion shift along the way.
It often starts with a basic need: they want to avoid looking messy. Once they achieve that baseline look, they often realize how appealing it is to present themselves more “put together.” And, once they start getting positive reactions from others, they find joy in dressing well.
Eventually, this leads to a newfound comfort and confidence, where putting on clothes becomes more about personal expression rather than meeting some arbitrary standard. Clothing finally becomes what it should be: enjoyable.
A client who recently revamped her wardrobe told me, “It’s astonishing how fun this can be.” What a shift in perspective! Such moments suggest that a psychological transformation often occurs.
Redefining Fun
The word “fun” might imply something trivial, and yes, clothing can sometimes be that way. But the joy we find in dressing well also conveys deeper values: it speaks to our dignity, our humanity, and even our cultural beliefs.
Remember the vibrant cars of the 1950s? There used to be an array of colors beyond just black or gray. Cars were a reflection of joy, similar to how clothes can be. If you look back at classic films, you can see that people were having a lot more fun with their fashion compared to the modern trends often characterized by darker, plainer outfits. Coming to the understanding that clothing can be fun is, in a sense, a return to our roots.
Personal Expression
A well-designed home is cozier than a sterile airport. A thoughtfully tended garden beats artificial grass any day. And well-coordinated outfits are far more attractive than dull, monochromatic sweats.
Engaging with clothing as a joyful pursuit offers unique psychological benefits too. Exercising creativity in the physical realm can elicit deeper satisfaction than merely clicking through digital spaces.
In this screen-filled age, taking control of your personal style feels revitalizing and human. It’s great to love the way you look and take responsibility for that choice. It’s an active pursuit, rather than just pressing buttons on a device.
Of course, not all fun is genuinely enjoyable. We all have moments when we make poor choices in the name of fun. Many men embark on their style journey starting from a place of immature choices—think silly T-shirts and outlandish footwear. But then they mature, reassess their wardrobe, and come to understand that classic, timeless pieces are not just good for their well-being but are genuinely enjoyable—the right kind of fun that enriches life.
