Clyburn seeking to bolster Biden support among Black voters with swing-state tour

Rep. James Clyburn (D.C.) plans to visit a number of battleground states later this year to drum up support for President Biden among Black voters, his office said.

The South Carolina Democratic Party plans to visit Michigan, Arizona, Nevada and Ohio later this year to promote Biden’s accomplishments, Cyberne’s office confirmed to The Hill.

The effort comes as recent polls show that Mr. Biden is losing support among young, black and Hispanic voters important to his voting coalition.

Clyburn, who resigned from House Democratic leadership earlier this year, dismissed recent polls in an interview with Punchbowl News.

“I don’t know what this vote means,” Clyburn told the outlet. “Joe Biden doesn’t have a problem with Black voters. No matter what you hear to the contrary, it’s not true.”

A New York Times/Siena College/Philadelphia Inquirer poll released earlier this week found Biden leading former President Trump 63% to 23% among black voters. found. This was a significant decrease from the 87 percent of Black voters who voted for Biden in 2020.

The poll showed Trump leading in five of the six battleground states, with Wisconsin being the only state where the incumbent had a lead. Punchbowl reported that Clyburn spoke at black churches and local Democratic events in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia last week, where he emphasized the risks of the November election.

“I think the answer is absolutely yes,” Clyburn told CNN’s “State of the Union.” “And the best illustration of that is in this primary, he got 96 percent of the vote, and the largest percentage of that (over 97 percent) came from two HBCUs and one community college. It was the town of Orangeburg.”
