CNBC Pans JD Vance’s $5k Child Tax Credit; Neutral on Kamala’s $6k Credit

CNBC ran two articles looking at competing proposals to expand the federal child tax credit, calling Republican J.D. Vance’s $5,000 proposal “challenging” while not criticizing Democrat Kamala Harris’ $6,000 plan.

The article was written by the same author, Kate Doerr. article The Aug. 12 letter about Vance’s proposal was titled, “Vance wants to increase the child tax credit to $5,000. Here’s why that will be difficult.” article A report on Harris’ plan dated August 16 was titled “Harris Seeks to Expand Child Tax Credit by Up to $6,000 for Families with Newborns.”

Here’s a comparison of the article text: First, three representative paragraphs from Vance’s article on the $5,000 child tax credit.

Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, former President Donald Trump’s Republican vice presidential nominee, wants to more than double the child tax credit, but policy experts say the increase could be difficult to implement.

Vance’s proposal would be a “relatively large expansion” of the current benefit, worth up to $2,000 per child in 2024, according to Garrett Watson, senior policy analyst and modeling manager at the Tax Foundation.

Vance’s comments came less than two weeks after Republican senators blocked an expansion of the child tax credit that passed the House with bipartisan support in January.

Below are three representative paragraphs from an article about Harris’ $6,000 proposal.

vice president Kamala Harris Announced on Friday Economic Planningincluding Expanding the Child Tax Credit Families with newborns can receive a total tax cut of up to $6,000.

The Democratic presidential candidate plans to Increase in child tax credit Enacted through the American Rescue Plan in 2021, up to $3,600 per childAccording to the campaign fact sheet:

Senate Republicans in early August Expanding the Child Tax Credit that Passed by the House of Representatives The bill has broad support, but Republicans in Congress are expected to revisit it after the election.

The latter article doesn’t explain the differences between the two proposals, but suggests that Harris would add a tax credit for newborns, rather than simply providing a tax credit per child, newborn or not.

Last week, CBS News was caught engaging in a similar practice revealing media bias by portraying Harris in a favorable light after she copied President Donald Trump’s idea and claimed it was her own new policy, after slamming President Donald Trump’s “no tip tax” policy.
