CNN analyst cautions that the Democratic Party's liberal stance may lead to 'electoral consequences' following surprising poll findings.

Shifts in Democratic Party Perception

A recent analysis indicates that many Americans believe the Democratic Party has shifted significantly to the left over the past three decades. This perspective contrasts with the media narratives that often focus on the Republican Party as moving rightward.

Polling data reveals that a majority of Americans feel the Democrats are embracing leftist ideologies more than before. CNN’s Chief Data Analyst, Harry Enten, highlighted that contemporary Democratic voters largely identify as liberal.

He pointed out that the far-left faction within the party has gained considerable influence. “It’s a pivotal moment for Democrats,” he noted in a CNN segment, mentioning how many past conservative Democrats are now less common.

Looking back to 1999, 26% of Democrats identified as conservative, while only 5% identified as very liberal. Fast forward to today, and that’s changed dramatically; 21% of Democrats now see themselves as very liberal, whereas the conservative majority has dwindled to just 8%.

Enten further referenced recent polling trends, which show an increasing number of Americans feeling that the Democratic Party is too liberal. For instance, in 2025, 58% of voters stated the party’s liberal stance is excessive, up from 42% in 1996 and 48% in 2013.

In another observation, Enten shared that about a third of Democrats now identify as democratic socialists. This figure rises to 42% among younger Democrats, specifically those under 35. He remarked, “What we’ve seen in New York City reflects a broader trend, not simply an isolated incident.”
