CNN anchor Caitlan Collins tried to lecture pro-life doctors and lawyers about the safety of abortion pills on Tuesday, but ended up getting fact-checked on air.
The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in 2019. Food and Drug Administration v. Hippocratic Medical Alliance on tuesday. The lawsuit stems from the FDA’s broad approval of mifepristone, one of the most commonly used pills in medical abortions, and the FDA’s expansion of access to the drug in 2016 and 2021. I object.
Dr. Christina Francis, an obstetrician-gynecologist and plaintiff in the case, and Kristen Wagoner, an attorney with the Alliance Defending Freedom, appeared on Collins’ show and dismantled her defense against mifepristone.
First, Dr. Collins claimed, without evidence, that Dr. Francis had no experience treating women who experienced complications from mifepristone.
“To be clear, Dr. Francis, I have never had to go to the emergency room for anything like this,” Dr. Collins told the doctor. “We’ve never had anyone who had complications from taking this request an abortion, right?”
Francis quickly corrected the record.
“In fact, I have cared for women who came to the emergency room with complications and had to undergo procedures to finish removing the pregnancy contents from their uterus,” Francis said. Corrected.
“But it’s not an abortion, right?” Collins followed.
“I was taken to the emergency room to complete the process started by the abortion pill,” Francis explained. “This is happening more and more often because, because of the FDA’s decision, women don’t even receive in-person medical care before taking these high-risk drugs.”
Mr. Wagoner then disputed Mr. Collins’ assertion that mifepristone was safe, arguing that the petitioners in this case should not allow women to consult their doctors before using the abortion pill to essentially induce a home birth. He reiterated that he was just hoping that he would.
“The FDA’s own label now says that if you go out and buy this drug, 1 in 25 women will end up visiting the emergency room and up to 7% of women will end up undergoing surgical intervention. ,” Wagoner explained.
“We are told that opioids are safe and that no one has the right to challenge the FDA. And this means that opioids are safe to use for chronic pain and definitely no one can get addicted to them. “This is the same FDA that told us it wouldn’t happen,” she said. .
However, Collins countered by arguing that “penicillin is more dangerous than mifepristone.”
But Mr. Wagoner had more solid data to fact-check Mr. Collins, all of which came directly from the FDA.
“According to the FDA’s own statistics and documentation, up to 7% of women will undergo surgical intervention. In just 2020, the FDA found that in-person visits to the doctor are only minimally burdensome to the patient. “It’s not necessary,” she explained. “And they clearly stated that thousands of women are suffering severe complications as a result of taking this drug.”
“This is not what I said. This is what the FDA said,” she added. “What they’re saying in court now is very different from what their own data tells them.”
Other than Wagoner’s explanation, Collins has no data to support her claims about the safety of abortion pills.
it is, From 2016FDA required doctors to report only Death from Mifepristone – Not all adverse effects and complications are present. And in 2021, the F.D.A. Furthermore, restrictions on drugs were relaxed for the following reasons: The apparent absence of justifiable side effects or complications.
