CNN employees state that Alex Marquardt's departure is clearly connected to the defamation trial.

CNN announced on Monday that it has parted ways with Chief National Security Correspondent Alex Marquardt. The decision came in the wake of a costly defamation lawsuit involving his reporting, which has left many of his colleagues puzzled about the timing.

A CNN insider mentioned that the trial linked to Marquardt’s reporting, involving US Navy veteran Zachary Young, was “clearly” a significant factor in the decision. This incident stemmed from a report Marquardt published in November 2021, which suggested Young was operating in a “black market” context, alleging he exploited vulnerable Afghans during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

You know, the judge initially awarded Young $5 million in damages, a decision that led to a private settlement with CNN. Interestingly, the judge had indicated that punitive damages could range between $50 million and $100 million.

Marquardt, who had been working at CNN for eight years, seemed to be in good standing just days before his dismissal, even participating in anniversary programming. It’s curious, though—staff members expressed confusion, noting that his departure occurred nearly five months post-trial and seemed directly related to the Young settlement.

Moreover, an ethics review was initiated by CNN soon after the settlement, examining the conduct of Marquardt and other reporters involved in the original story. While the network cited “unspecified editing differences” as the reason for Marquardt’s exit, it leaves one wondering about the internal dynamics at play.

It’s worth mentioning that proving defamation in court is notoriously challenging, but Young’s case was a rare occurrence where the court found CNN liable, which eventually led to a settlement. Perhaps unsettling evidence surfaced during the discovery, including messages from Marquardt himself.

Comments made in 2021, where he reportedly stated he would “nail” Young, were highlighted during the case, indicating a potential bias. Another insider remarked that it’s hard to detach Marquardt’s departure from the trial, given his significant role.

In his resignation message, Marquardt reflected on his time at CNN with a mixture of pride and sorrow, calling it an “honor” to work in such a renowned field. CNN has chosen not to comment further on the situation, sticking to its protocol regarding human resources issues.

Young, for his part, criticized Marquardt post-trial, stating that he believed the reporter remained proud of his work, despite the damage caused. Throughout the case, Marquardt maintained that his report was not meant as a “hit” job, insisting he was simply doing his job.

Reporting staff expressed regret at the loss, recognizing Marquardt’s talent and contributions, especially in challenging environments. As the dust settles, it seems many are left questioning what comes next for both Marquardt and CNN following this high-profile fallout.
