CNN is starting a new streaming service following the unsuccessful launch of CNN+.

CNN is set to introduce a new streaming service this fall, nearly three years after the abrupt shutdown of its previous streaming venture, CNN+, which lasted just a month. This announcement was made by CNN CEO Mark Thompson during a staff meeting, and it was initially reported by the New York Times.

The new service aims to enhance existing digital subscriptions for customers. It will provide paid subscribers with unlimited access to articles and exclusive CNN content on its website.

In a press release, CNN described the upcoming service, called “All Access,” as a “simple and centralized way” to access news across various platforms, including mobile apps, connected TVs, and websites.

However, it seems there’s some frustration within the staff due to anticipated budget cuts and layoffs affecting the network. Alex McCallum, executive vice president of digital products and services, emphasized CNN’s commitment to innovation in journalism, noting that expanding subscriptions, including streaming, reflects a pioneering spirit. He stated that the new service would offer audiences more convenient access to reliable news and original programming.

Details regarding pricing and launch dates are still pending. This update comes on the heels of the closure of CNN+, which had faced scrutiny for its reliance on paid subscriptions amid struggles to capture audiences for its basic cable counterpart.

CNN+ had a massive launch investment of $300 million but ultimately failed to connect with viewers, leading to its shutdown just a month after launch. Following the closure, CNN’s CEO Chris Licht indicated that the focus would shift toward enhancing CNN’s core news operations and digital presence. He expressed gratitude for the efforts put into the now-defunct service.

On a related note, Fox is also preparing to launch its own streaming service, “Fox One,” this fall, marking a new chapter in the competitive streaming landscape. “Fox One” will provide live streaming and on-demand access to a variety of Fox networks and services, all bundled into one platform.
