CNN Staff React to Coverage Adjustments on Trump Story
Employees at CNN expressed surprise when their leader encouraged them to “soften” their coverage regarding President Trump’s dismantling of the East Tower. This feedback came after a rare visit from top executives to the White House.
During an editorial meeting on Thursday, CNN’s chief, Mark Thompson, suggested that viewers weren’t particularly interested in the East Tower story, according to accounts from two individuals familiar with the discussion relayed in the Status Newsletter.
Thompson’s comments, which diverged from his usual practice of avoiding intricate editorial issues, left staff feeling a bit bewildered. It was characterized as “bizarre” by some.
As reported by Status, many reporters began to question the timing of Thompson’s remarks. These comments coincided with President Trump progressing toward constructing a $250 million ballroom in the old East Wing. There were even whispers among staff about what other stories might be downplayed next.
CNN, which is part of Warner Bros. Discovery, took a stance against these remarks. Thompson stated last weekend that there was “zero truth” to the report.
A representative for the network confirmed that Thompson did indeed visit the White House recently.
According to Status, Thompson’s recent appearances included a location on Pennsylvania Avenue. During this time, CNN was preparing to launch a new direct-to-consumer streaming service. Details about his meetings remain unclear.
Thompson, with a background as a former BBC and New York Times leader, was brought in by WBD CEO David Zaslav to revitalize the struggling cable channel. He aims for a more inclusive programming strategy for the upcoming streaming service while hoping to avoid the failures of the previous CNN+ platform initiated by ex-CNN president Jeff Zucker.
The recent White House meeting drew attention, especially as CNN’s parent company is currently on the market, having received various bids.
Reports indicate there are potential buyers including Paramount Skydance, with connections to Trump associate Larry Ellison, as well as Netflix, Amazon, and Comcast.
Status suggests that Thompson is conscious of his precarious position as CNN president if a sale occurs, with sources hinting that he would likely lose his job.
CNN’s relationship with Trump has historically been tumultuous; he has often criticized the network for “fake news,” and there have been notable confrontations with correspondents like Caitlin Collins and Jim Acosta.
The controversy over the recent White House comments isn’t the first time Thompson has urged staff to temper their criticism of Trump. In January, he advised journalists, including prominent figures like Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper, to avoid “pre-judging” Trump during coverage of the inauguration. He also encouraged restraint regarding expressions of anger and not to revisit past grievances.
A CNN spokesperson opted not to comment regarding the January discussion, and efforts to get a response from the White House are ongoing.
