Reagan Star Dennis Quaid faced a series of hostile questions from CNN's Chris Wallace about his public support for former President Donald Trump, with the left-leaning TV host speculating that Ronald Reagan would not have acknowledged Trump's presidency.
Dennis Quaid appears in this week's episode of the Max streaming series Who is talking to Chris Wallace?.
“You supported Donald Trump in this election,” Wallace asked at one point, “and I'm a little concerned about that because a lot of people say there's no place for Ronald Reagan in Donald Trump's Republican Party.”
Quaid responded, “Well, in some ways I disagree. Ronald Reagan was a man of his time. Trump is a man of his time. But I feel that the ideals of Ronald Reagan and the ideals of Donald J. Trump are very similar.”
Wallace reiterated that point: “I have to say President Reagan would have been appalled by Trump's actions,” the CNN host said.
Quaid again defended himself.
“I would argue that Ronald Reagan put America first,” the actor said. “The situation then, the issues surrounding the 1980 election, were very similar to today. We had high inflation, high gas prices, hostages in the Middle East. We were hearing that the nation was in decline, we were feeling a sense of depression that Jimmy Carter himself described. And we had issues that are very similar to what's going on today.”
