CNN’s Van Jones becomes emotional reacting to Biden dropping out of race: ‘Heartbroken’

CNN commentator and former Obama administration official Van Jones became visibly emotional as he reacted to the news that President Biden was dropping out of the race.

Biden stepped down on Sunday and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the new Democratic nominee.

“When your arm gets tired, you let another pitcher finish the game,” Jones said Sunday on CNN. “And that’s exactly what Joe Biden did. And he did it for all of us.”

Jones said Democrats wouldn’t have been able to get as far without Biden’s help.

“The Democratic Party [Biden’]”At the end of the day, this is a family affair,” Jones said. “Joe Biden’s body may not be as strong as it once was. His language skills may not be as sharp as they once were. But his heart is as big as ever.”

Jones also likened Biden’s resignation to taking away an older family member’s driver’s license.

“Grandpa [when] “We have to take the keys away,” Jones said. “He keeps fighting and it’s frustrating for everybody.”

“And then you finally get your keys back,” he continues, growing increasingly emotional, “and you just cry, because that’s someone you love. Someone you care about. Someone who’s been there for you. Without him, you wouldn’t be here. And you had to take something from him.”

Jones said he doesn’t know who Biden’s successor will be.

“Politics is politics,” he said, “but this is a human moment for one of America’s great men.”

“I just want to say, I don’t know who’s going to be vice president, who’s not going to be vice president. I don’t know anything about politics,” Jones said. “I just love this guy, I care about this guy, and it’s been hard to sit here every day and talk about him as if he’s a thorn in the side of the party.”

“We’re all going to be in this situation at some point, and I hope we can take a moment to honor and love this man,” Jones said. “I love Joe Biden, I appreciate what he’s done, and there are so many people hurting today, and even if it was the right thing to do, it’s still awful.”

MSNBC host and former White House press secretary Jen Psaki responded live during her show Sunday.

“While there have been reports that Democrats are calling on him to do so, there has been little indication from those close to him or many in his campaign that this is exactly what was going to happen,” she said after reading the letter the president sent to X.

“This was a very difficult decision, but I think it reflects the best of Joe Biden,” Coons said.
