Co-creator of 'Daily Show' claims CBS canceled Colbert's show out of fear

Winstead Critiques CBS for Cancelling Colbert’s Show

Lizz Winstead, the co-creator of “The Daily Show,” recently shared her thoughts on MSNBC regarding the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s late-night program. She accused CBS of acting out of fear in this decision.

“To just drop the franchise itself… It’s Stephen Colbert. There’s something deeper here. It feels like a fear response,” Winstead asserted. She pointed out that the network’s actions suggest a lack of courage, especially given that audiences have favored shows like “The Daily Show” with John Oliver and Colbert’s own work. Winstead expressed skepticism about CBS’s rationale for shutting down the show.

According to CBS, the cancellation is framed as a “pure financial decision,” made in light of the challenges facing late-night broadcasting.

Many on the left believe that political factors influenced the decision to end Colbert’s show. Just days before the announcement, Colbert had criticized Paramount’s settlement concerning lawsuits involving “60 Minutes,” coinciding with Paramount’s merger with Skydance Media.

Winstead, among other comedians, maintains that Colbert provided a vital voice in late-night television. She emphasized the appeal of authenticity in comedy, contrasting it with more scripted formats. “When you’re real, people connect with you,” she noted, highlighting what she sees as the usual authenticity that both Colbert and John Oliver bring to the stage.

In her piece for Rolling Stone, Winstead dismissed CBS’s financial justifications, suggesting instead that the network might be trying to silence progressive viewpoints.

She emphasized that Colbert’s cancellation serves as more than just loss; it represents a broader warning about the challenges comedians face today. Winstead believes the underlying fears—of voices that resonate with audiences—are a troubling sign for the industry.
