Co-Founder of AI Startup Fired Amid Internal Conflicts

The co-founder of a Silicon Valley AI startup, valued at $12 billion, has reportedly been dismissed following months of internal strife. This situation began with undisclosed workplace relationships and escalated to a conflict over leadership roles.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Barrett Zoff, co-founder and chief technology officer of Thinking Machines Lab, was let go last Wednesday after an intense meeting with CEO Mira Murati. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss concerns regarding Zoff’s behavior, trustworthiness, and performance.

During this meeting, Zoff disclosed to Murati that he had engaged in a romantic relationship with a junior colleague while he was at OpenAI.

It seems Murati had her suspicions about the relationship several months earlier, although Zoff initially denied any involvement. However, not long afterward, both he and the woman admitted to the relationship.

Afterward, she left the company to return to OpenAI.

Interestingly, although Zoff’s partner was a junior employee, she had not reported the situation to him. The article mentions:

Zoff claimed he was terminated after learning that Murati was negotiating for a different position elsewhere.

“Thinking Machines Lab terminated my employment only after they found out I was leaving the company. I resigned entirely,” he stated.

He added, “TML has never cited performance reasons or my unethical conduct for my termination, and any suggestion otherwise is just false and harmful.”

Like his colleague, Zoff also returned to OpenAI, although her name was not specified.

The fallout from this relationship led to deeper disputes within the company regarding leadership and control.

Earlier this month, Zoff, along with two colleagues, confronted Murati about their disagreements with the company’s direction and advocated for Zoff to have more authority over technical decisions, including direct reporting to senior executives instead of Murati.

Murati, however, countered this request, citing worries about Zoff’s recent productivity. Executives had noticed a marked decline in his engagement after he was removed from his management position, including a significant dip in his activity on Slack, which is the main platform for internal communication.

Moreover, co-founder Luke Metz and founding researcher Sam Schoenholz have also left the company, returning to OpenAI. Earlier in October, another co-founder, Andrew Tulloch, departed to rejoin Meta Platforms.

Founded last year by Murati and several former OpenAI executives and researchers, Thinking Machines Lab quickly gained traction as one of the most promising AI startups in Silicon Valley.

The company had secured a record $2 billion in seed funding, achieving a valuation of $12 billion by persuading investors of its goal to create more customizable and transparent artificial intelligence systems.

However, these recent departures leave the startup with only three of its six original founders less than a year after its launch, underlining the intense competition for top-tier AI talent and the vulnerability of even the most well-funded newcomers.

Murati previously held the role of interim CEO at OpenAI following a brief dismissal of Sam Altman but has not responded to repeated inquiries from the Journal. OpenAI also chose not to comment on the situation.
