Concerns About New York City Mayor-elect

Alyssa Farrah Griffin, co-host of “The View,” raised questions on Friday about whether Zoran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York City, has the necessary experience to manage the nation’s largest city. She suggested that Mamdani might face significant challenges in implementing his ambitious policies, primarily due to this lack of experience.

Joy Behar kicked off the discussion by mentioning that Mamdani had sought advice from three Democratic governors—Josh Shapiro, J.B. Pritzker, and Wes Moore—on how to counter potential actions from President Trump that target immigrants and possibly involve the National Guard.

Griffin pointed out that many fellow Democrats are closely watching how Mamdani’s administration unfolds. She asserted, “If my prediction is that he’s going to run into a lot of obstacles… his ability to influence major policy changes is very limited.” This, she suggested, could mean that Democrats ought to consider leaning towards moderate candidates instead.

Others concurred that Democratic leadership would likely evaluate Mamdani’s first year to determine whether to support his democratic socialist views or continue backing more centrist candidates like Shapiro and newly elected Governor Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey.

Griffin emphasized Mamdani’s inexperience as a key reason for her apprehensions about his capability to lead such a vast metropolis. She elaborated that someone without experience in business or large-scale economic management might find it challenging to handle the city’s complexities. She also questioned whether Mamdani is adequately prepared to engage with Trump, especially after the brash remarks made during his victory speech.

During the discussion, the hosts largely agreed that consulting with experienced Democrats like the governors Mamdani reached out to would be a strategic move. Ana Navarro suggested that it’s prudent for someone new to a significant role to gain insights from those who are already navigating it successfully.

Navarro mentioned that she’s particularly pleased that two of the governors Mamdani consulted are Jewish, pointing out the city’s large Jewish population and the relevant issues that need to be addressed. Meanwhile, Sarah Haines noted that Mamdani’s conversation with Pritzker focused on strategizing responses to the Trump administration.

Haines also reflected on Mamdani’s relatively young age and limited background, stating that his experience has mainly been in campaign volunteering and local community issues. Transitioning from managing a district of 120,000 people to overseeing a city of 8 million presents a steep learning curve.
