The co-hosts of “The View” quickly interjected to clarify that author and former lawyer John Grisham was not talking about the assassination of a Supreme Court justice during his recent guest appearance on the show.

“I wrote a great book called The Pelican Brief about two Supreme Court justices being assassinated, and I was thinking about writing it again!” Grisham said during a guest appearance on ABC’s “The View” on Wednesday, drawing laughter from the audience.

“No, no, no, no!” co-host Joy Behar quickly responded.

“I’m writing part two!” Goldberg explained along with the other hosts. “I’m saying I’m writing part two!”

Grisham then told the audience, “It’s all fiction. Don’t take offense.”

“That’s just fiction,” Behar agreed. “It’s just a fabrication.”

Grisham appeared on the show to promote her latest book, “Camino Ghosts,” which is available as an Audible audiobook read by “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg. Behar asked the author her thoughts on the current conservative-majority Supreme Court and whether she plans to write a book or movie about the court’s current controversies.

“The Supreme Court has never been in such a bad state,” Grisham said of the real-life Supreme Court. “Some of the decisions and ethical issues got worse in my lifetime. It was in 2000 when five Republicans on the Supreme Court elected a president. It was political, it was Bush v. Gore. That’s when everything really started to get worse.”

After arguing that the Supreme Court is getting worse with every term, Grisham suggested, “There’s no solution because you can’t fire Supreme Court justices. The solution is to make them all retire at 75. All federal judges should have to retire at 75.”

Earlier in the show, First Lady Jill Biden, wife of President Joe Biden, laid out a dystopian vision of what America would be like if President Trump were to return to office and appoint another Supreme Court justice.

“We can’t take things for granted,” she warned. “And think about the Supreme Court. It’s fair to say that things are getting worse. Can you imagine what would happen if we put more Republicans on the Supreme Court? No! We would lose all our rights!”
