Jaguars Coach Receives Unexpected Praise After Season-Ending Loss
Right after the Jaguars’ season came to a close, head coach Liam Cohen found himself receiving some surprising support.
Following the 27-24 playoff defeat against the Bills in Jacksonville, Cohen was showered with compliments by, of all people, reporters at the postgame press conference.
“How are you doing today?” started Lynn Jones from the Jacksonville Free Press. “I just want to say congratulations on your success. Hold your head up, okay? You all had an amazing season. You did a great job today.”
“Duval, you are the one! Keep up the good work, and may you and the team continue to succeed,” Jones added.
Cohen, who is 40 and in his first year as head coach, chuckled at the remarks and expressed gratitude, saying, “Thank you, I appreciate it.”
This warm interaction stirred up mixed reactions on social media and led to a discussion about the role of journalists in sports coverage.
ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter was among those who highlighted the exchange positively. “This is a great postgame exchange between a reporter and Jaguars coach Liam Cohen,” he shared online.
However, former ESPN journalist Jemele Hill voiced skepticism. In response to Schefter, she questioned the appropriateness of the exchange, stating, “That person can’t be a reporter. I wouldn’t have used the word great.”
Longtime NFL reporter Mark Long criticized the moment further, pointing out that it was inappropriate for fans or non-commercial media to act in such a manner. “It’s embarrassing for those involved and wastes time for those of us who are actually doing work,” he commented.
Another prominent reporter, ESPN’s Brookle Pryor, also disagreed with the sentiments expressed at the press conference. “This may be kind, but it’s not a reporter’s job to comfort a coach during a postgame. They should be asking critical questions about the game,” he explained.
Jones, who is known for her commitment to journalism, received recognition for her encouraging words to Cohen. Will Brown, a reporter, defended her, saying, “Lynn has a long history of giving a voice to communities often sidelined by traditional media. She’s not part of the ‘fake media’ narrative.”
Brian Scheible of Sporting News commended Jones for her remarks. He pointed out that she consistently brings positivity, even during tough seasons.
The press conference became a trending topic, particularly given that the Jaguars’ season ended disappointingly. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence expressed the team’s feelings post-loss, stating, “It’s disappointing, but we know we gave everything we had this year.”
Scott Van Pelt addressed the press conference’s controversy during ESPN’s recap, stating, “I have no problem with kindness in this world. We can afford to be nice.”
