Coast Guard suspends search for 3 missing after boat capsized in Alaska

The U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday called off the search for three people missing after their boat capsized in the Gulf of Alaska.

The Coast Guard said it received a distress call Wednesday morning from the 21-foot Hughes Craft vessel near Iarick Bay, about 35 miles southwest of Seward.

Nearby ships were alerted and a Coast Guard aircraft spotted the capsized vessel.

“A nearby good Samaritan rescued one person from the water who was unresponsive and had no signs of life,” the Coast Guard said in a post on X. The person was later pronounced dead by a local doctor, the Coast Guard said.

Crews searched approximately 95 square miles before the search for the three missing people was called off.

Seward, population just over 5,000, is located about 125 miles south of Anchorage.
