Coast Guard welcomes its biggest group of new recruits in almost 40 years

Coast Guard Achieves Record Recruitment in 2026

The U.S. Coast Guard has successfully recruited its largest enlisted class in almost forty years during fiscal year 2026. This achievement marks the third consecutive year that the organization has met and exceeded its recruitment targets, as it aims to grow its ranks further.

In the fiscal year 2026, a total of 5,445 active-duty members enlisted, a significant increase from 5,204 in 2025 and 4,422 in 2024. Additionally, 346 active-duty officers were commissioned, which is the second-highest figure in the Coast Guard’s history.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin remarked that these impressive recruitment numbers indicate a strong desire among citizens across the nation to serve. He expressed pride in the new Coast Guard recruits, highlighting their dedication to defending the homeland and emphasizing the need to ensure they receive adequate training and support.

The Coast Guard made notable strides in its recruiting efforts by opening four new offices in locations including Miami, Florida; Long Island, New York; Austin, Texas; and even in the Netherlands. Coast Guard Vice Commandant Adm. Tom Allan noted that the increasing enlistment numbers reflect a growing enthusiasm for service.

Allan attributed the success to Americans’ readiness to engage in demanding missions that serve national interests, saying that it goes beyond just numbers. He expressed a commitment to building a top-tier Coast Guard workforce and acknowledged the recruiters’ efforts in achieving these outstanding results.

Moreover, the Coast Guard is investing in infrastructure improvements to accommodate its expanding workforce. A substantial contract worth $400 million has been awarded for the modernization of Training Center Cape May in New Jersey, which represents the largest shore construction contract in the service’s history.

This recruitment growth aligns with the Coast Guard’s broader modernization strategy, known as Force Design, which aims to enlarge its military personnel by at least 15,000 by the end of fiscal year 2028. This expansion is intended to support a growing fleet and meet rising mission requirements.
