Coby White’s career-high points won’t count due to bizarre Play-In rule

Coby White’s incredible performance on Wednesday night helped his Chicago Bulls defeat the Atlanta Hawks and advance toward the East’s final NBA playoff spot.

However, White’s career-best performance will not count toward the record books.

Yes, White’s 42 points are the most he has ever scored in a single game, seven points more than the 37 points he gave up against the Sacramento Kings on March 4. However, the play-in tournament, which determines each conference’s seventh and eighth seeds for the playoffs, does not count towards his season or career record.

The NBA’s strange rules don’t change White’s thoughts about his nights on the court.

“I definitely think this is a career high for me,” he told reporters after the game. “It’s on the statistics sheet here.”

Now, instead of just disappearing into thin air, statistics totaled in play-in games only count as records for a specific game, not the regular season or playoffs.

White was very efficient from the field in the Bulls’ 131-116 win, going 15-of-21 and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line, scoring 42 points. He also had nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals on a night when Chicago needed a win to preserve its season.

The Bulls have a chance to earn the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs if they defeat the Miami Heat, who lost 105-104 to the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.

White also helped his cause with teammates DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic dropping 22 and 24 points, respectively.

The Bulls will be counting on White, a Most Improved Player candidate this season, to continue his great play on the court Friday night in their quest for a playoff berth.

But know that even if White exceeds the 42-point total he set Wednesday, it still won’t count toward the official record.
