Coco Gauff’s Frustration After Australian Open Defeat
American tennis player Coco Gauff expressed her frustration after her recent loss at the Australian Open. While heading back to the locker room, she was seen repeatedly hitting her racket in the tunnel, visibly upset.
The third seed in the tournament suffered a straight-set defeat against Elina Svitolina, with a score of 6-1, 6-2. During the match, Gauff recorded five double faults and managed to convert only one of her two break points.
On camera, Gauff vented about the situation, highlighting the need for discretion. “I remember a moment in the US Open final against Arina (Sabalenka) where this happened. I really don’t think that needs to be shown,” she told reporters. She mentioned her past experiences with breaking rackets, stating she had vowed never to do it again on the court because it didn’t reflect well. “So, let’s perhaps have a little chat about that,” she added whimsically.
Gauff noted that it’s healthier to release her feelings rather than take them out on her support team. “They’re great people and don’t deserve to bear the brunt of my frustration,” she explained. “I know I can be emotional, so it helps to find other outlets.” She acknowledged her efforts to keep her emotions in check, saying she’d prefer not to display that behavior in front of younger fans, yet also recognized the importance of expressing her feelings.
Throughout her career, Gauff has yet to secure a title at the Australian Open. She reached the semifinals in 2024, but was eliminated in the quarterfinals the previous year.
