Coco Gauff Reflects on Tournament Challenges
Coco Gauff shared her feelings of emotional strain after her recent matches, describing herself as “kindly broken” and acknowledging a sense of being “somehow broken” while also trying to focus on positive aspects of her journey in this year’s tournament.
In the fourth round, she faced Naomi Osaka, losing with scores of 3-6, 2-6.
“I think there’s a push to maintain a positive outlook. Honestly, I was really disappointed after the match,” Gauff remarked. “It was a tough moment with my team. However, hearing their perspectives gave me some positivity. If I had approached this tournament in the same way I did in Cincinnati, I probably wouldn’t have even made it past the first round.”
She continued, “I feel a need to let everything come together now. I mean, I knew going into this that it would be a challenging tournament. Did I feel particularly confident after my last match?”
Gauff, whose serve was a bit shaky at the start of the tournament, still performed well but noted she committed 33 unforced errors in comparison to Osaka’s 12.
The 2025 US Open has been quite an emotional journey for Gauff. She previously delivered a remarkable performance against No. 28 Magdalena Frech, shedding tears of joy after finally overcoming Donna Vekic in the second round.
“It definitely wasn’t at the level I aimed for, but I’m viewing it as a step in the right direction, especially considering how emotionally charged this week has been for me,” she added.
On the other hand, Osaka has advanced to the quarterfinals to face Karolina Mciba.
