Coco Gauff Returns to Social Media, Addresses Criticism

Coco Gauff recently returned to TikTok after taking a month-long break from social media. She wanted to share a message after encountering negative comments regarding her appearance, specifically her natural hair, which emerged following a new Miu Miu advertisement.

In an eight-minute video, Gauff provided insights into the behind-the-scenes aspects of the photo shoot. She expressed her preference for not having her hair slicked back for the images, noting, “it’s not good for the hair.”

Gauff acknowledged the attention her appearance received, stating, “Thousands of people are talking about my appearance, and not in a positive way…” She emphasized that she wouldn’t apologize for her hair, pointing out that girls with similar hair types should feel confident as well. “If my 4C hair is good enough for high fashion brands like Miu Miu, then yours is too. I’m not going to apologize for that,” she declared.

The athlete shared that her decision to wear minimal makeup was intentional, aiming to connect with her audience through a “minimal ‘Miu Miu’ aesthetic.”

Her message extended to young black girls, encouraging them to embrace their own hair choices. “Do what you want with your hair… At the end of the day, those criticizing are often dealing with their own insecurities,” she explained. Gauff also noted that personal expression, whether through braids, wigs, or minimal styles, is valid. “Minimal is beautiful. Both spectrums and everything in between is beautiful,” she added.

Despite her confidence, Gauff admitted that the criticism made her feel “rough” at times. She mentioned feeling uplifted after speaking out and acknowledged her struggles with self-image throughout her life as a young black woman.

Encouraging anyone feeling uncertain about their appearance, Gauff expressed hope that they would find peace and confidence. As the reigning champion set to defend her French Open title starting May 19th, she emphasized the importance of self-acceptance and support among individuals.
