Code Pink Disrupts Climate Week Event in NYC
A member of Code Pink, a well-known far-left group that frequently confronts politicians, interrupted a Climate Week event in New York City on Thursday. The protester accused the U.S. military of having a significant role in the ongoing climate crisis.
This disruption happened at an event organized by The Nature Conservancy. Code Pink claims that the organization avoids discussing the military’s substantial carbon emissions and the environmental harm caused by U.S. military bases as well as its wars and occupations.
“There’s an elephant in the room that The Nature Conservancy does not want to address,” stated a man identified by Code Pink as Aaron, who is the campaign organizer for their “War Is Not Green” initiative. “It’s destroying ecosystems. It’s affecting fish. It’s actually harming the world.”
Aaron further highlighted the Pentagon’s budget, which totals $1.5 trillion, and criticized the military’s role in environmental degradation. He questioned why an organization like The Nature Conservancy, which has over $2 billion at its disposal and is dedicated to protecting land and water, chooses not to tackle this issue.
According to Code Pink, their participation in NYC Climate Week was intended to emphasize that any genuine discussion about climate change must encompass the military-industrial complex, which they claim plays a major part in global warming.
During the protest, Code Pink urged The Nature Conservancy and similar environmental organizations to officially acknowledge the military as a primary institutional polluter. They also demanded that these groups refuse any partnerships or funding related to the military-industrial complex and utilize their platforms to call for cuts to the Pentagon’s budget alongside an end to wars that damage ecosystems.
“You can’t claim to protect the land and waters while ignoring the largest institutional polluter on Earth,” Aaron explained after the disruption. “The Nature Conservancy has a huge budget and a global platform. They have a responsibility to identify the military as a contributor to climate destruction. Not speaking up is complicity.”
