Colin Allred Runs for US Senate Again
Colin Allred, a former representative from Texas, is gearing up for another bid for the US Senate, just months after his defeat by Republican Senator Ted Cruz. This time, he’s setting his sights on challenging Republican Senator John Cornyn, who himself is facing a primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Allred made his announcement through a campaign video released on Tuesday, where he criticized both Cornyn and Paxton, labeling them as “too corrupt to care for us and too weak to fight for us.” In his message, he reflected on his journey, discussing how he worked his way through the NFL and eventually achieved his goal of buying a home for his mother.
He stated, “The truth is, you don’t need to have a son in the NFL to own a home.” Allred continued to express his concern about the current state of affairs, suggesting that those who play by the rules struggle, while those who cut corners seem to thrive.
Allred has committed to an “anti-corruption plan,” emphasizing his resolve to bring change to Washington. He noted his track record, highlighting that during his six years in Congress, he has avoided corporate PAC money and hasn’t engaged in stock trading.
This announcement comes on the heels of a close election where Allred lost to Cruz by nearly nine percentage points. That race was one of the most expensive in the nation, with Democrats investing over $130 million in efforts to unseat Cruz.
Interestingly, Allred, who played in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans after being undrafted from Baylor University, previously overturned a Republican district and became a member of Congress in 2018.
Additionally, former astronaut Terry Bytis has also entered the Senate race as a Democratic contender.
