Colin Montgomerie’s controversial comments just don’t stop.
The Scottish golfer last week questioned why Tiger Woods hasn’t retired yet, and now he has raised doubts about the 2025 Ryder Cup, scheduled for next September.
With more than a year until the tournament at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York, Montgomery believes European players are at an inherent disadvantage when playing in the United States.
“God Almighty!” Montgomery He told the Times. “You definitely need an away win in the Ryder Cup and I don’t think that’s going to happen in New York. approved “To win there, someone will come and steal your golf balls or something. That’s the drinking culture in America.”
The World Golf Hall of Famer last played in the Ryder Cup in 2010, captaining Team Europe to a narrow 14 1/2/-13 ½ victory over Team USA.
Montgomerie has never finished higher than second in a major tournament, but he is highly regarded in the Ryder Cup.
Montgomerie has played for Team Europe in eight Ryder Cups and has earned a total of 23.5 points, just two behind Sergio Garcia for the all-time leader.
Montgomerie recently finished tied for 44th at the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship at six-over par.

The 2025 Cup has already been in the news since it was announced in early July that Keegan Bradley would replace Tiger Woods as U.S. captain.
Cheered on by Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa, Team USA claimed the 2021 Ryder Cup trophy with a dominant victory at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.
Interestingly, the U.S. team has taken home the trophy at every tournament played in the U.S. since 2012, when a European team won two straight tournaments at Medina Country Club in Medina, Illinois.
If the European team defies Montgomerie’s prediction and wins the Ryder Cup in 2025, it would be the first time either team has won back-to-back tournaments since 2015.
