College Student Arrested for Weapon Possession

A student at a Florida college has been arrested after allegedly ordering a significant amount of ammunition for his dorm room. Reports indicate that 1,500 rounds of ammunition were ordered, and additionally, authorities found a semi-automatic rifle stored under his bed.

Constantine Demetriades, a 21-year-old senior at Rollins College, was taken into custody on Wednesday by police in Winter Park. He faces charges related to having a weapon on school grounds after campus safety reported the ammunition order to law enforcement, according to the arrest records released by local news.

When authorities searched Demetriades’ dormitory, they discovered an unloaded AR-15 along with a black carry case. Inside the case, there was one loaded magazine, five empty magazines, a tactical vest, a knife, and earmuffs.

Demetriades, who has a reported interest in shooting, explained to the police that he had just returned from a trip to New Jersey. He stated that the rifle was legally obtained and registered. Interestingly, he mentioned typically keeping the firearm at a friend’s house, only bringing it on campus once before.

According to him, there was no intention to cause harm. However, it’s important to note that while Florida allows open carry, Rollins College strictly prohibits any weapons on its campus. He acknowledged being aware of the college’s policy and informed authorities that a concealed carry permit from New Jersey would not apply in Florida.

The university announced that Demetriades has been banned from the campus until the situation is addressed, and an internal investigation is underway.

Rollins College issued a statement noting that they took the report of a potential weapons policy violation seriously, prompting an immediate investigation. They confirmed that the student cooperated fully during the inquiry.
