Keegan Bradley’s Surprising Ryder Cup Decision
Keegan Bradley found himself quite taken aback this week when he checked in on the status of the Ryder Cup selections. It turns out, Bryson DeChambeau, involved with LIV Golf, can only rack up qualifying points through major tournaments. This has created a bit of a challenge, given his limited chances recently.
His performance has been a mixed bag; he tied for fifth in the PGA Championship but missed the cut at the US Open and had a disappointing finish at the last week’s Open Championship.
Currently, DeChambeau stands fifth among US golfers for qualifying points—the top six players earn automatic spots. Yet, maintaining that position could be tough for him, especially with the absence of more opportunities for earning FedEx Cup Points. Still, Bradley believes in DeChambeau’s potential. Even Colin Morikawa, who is currently ranked eighth, supports the decision. Morikawa acknowledges DeChambeau as one of the top talents, regardless of the tour he plays on.
“He’s one of the best golfers in the world right now,” Morikawa said in a recent conversation. “Just because he’s playing on another tour doesn’t mean he should be skipped over.” He emphasized that Bradley wants the best golfers, and DeChambeau brings a unique energy to the team.
Choosing DeChambeau was a straightforward decision for Bradley, who could become the first captain to replicate Arnold Palmer’s success from 1965.
In a recent statement, Bradley expressed how crucial DeChambeau’s presence would be, highlighting not just his skills but also the energy and passion he brings to the team.
Following a solid performance at the Royal Portrush, DeChambeau opened up about his interactions with Bradley, describing them as easy-going and motivating, especially leading up to the Ryder Cup. He pointed out the inspiration he found from a personal message that has resonated with him during this time.
Looking ahead, DeChambeau conveyed his eagerness, stating, “This year, we’re done with losing.” His determination is palpable as Team USA prepares for the upcoming Ryder Cup.
The highly-anticipated Ryder Cup is set to take place at the renowned Bethpage Black Course in Long Island from September 26 to 28. It’s worth noting that Team USA hasn’t lost a Ryder Cup since 2012, when they faced a dramatic defeat in what’s known as the Medina miracle.
Interestingly, DeChambeau did not participate in the last Ryder Cup in Rome, unlike some of his peers. The upcoming tournament promises a lot, and Team USA aims to maintain their winning streak.
