LANDOVER, Md. — Colombia scored three goals in the final 11 minutes of the second half to cruise to a 5-1 victory over a struggling United States team on Saturday in a Copa America warm-up match.
Goals from John Arias, Rafael Santos Borre, Richard Rios, Jorge Carrascal and Luis Sinisterla led Colombia to their seventh straight win and a 22-game unbeaten run.
Tim Weah scored a goal in the 58th minute for the United States, which has six losses and two draws against Colombia since 2005.
Mistakes in passing by Johnny Cardozo, Ware and Cameron Carter-Vickers led to the final three goals.
The only other time the U.S. has allowed that many goals since losing 5-1 to Czechoslovakia in the 1990 World Cup was in a 5-0 loss to Mexico in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup final.
Colombia has remained unbeaten since a 1-0 loss to Argentina in a World Cup qualifier on Feb. 1, 2022.
The U.S. plays a friendly against Brazil on Wednesday in Orlando, Fla., before opening the Copa America on June 23, followed by games against Panama and Uruguay. The U.S. is one of six countries invited to this tournament of the South American championships.
Colombia will play an exhibition match against Bolivia in Denver on June 15 before moving on to the first round in a group with Paraguay, Costa Rica and Brazil, with the United States potentially facing Colombia in the quarterfinals.
The U.S. is winless in its last five matches against South American teams since beating Ecuador 1-0 in 2019, with three of those matches ending in draws.
At Commander’s Field, a largely pro-Colombia crowd wore yellow jerseys, while U.S. players wore rainbow numbers on their jerseys in honor of Pride Month.
Colombia took the lead in the sixth minute when James Rodriguez fed a sliding Antonee Robinson with his left foot and passed to Arias, who got a touch on the ball to get past Tim Liam and then beat Matt Turner from six yards out to fire a shot over the goalkeeper’s left shoulder and into the near post for his second goal of the international game.
Colombia doubled their lead in the 19th minute. Rodriguez took a short corner kick and played it to Arias, who crossed. Ream headed it in to clear, and Mateus Uribe headed the ball back in front. Santos Borré turned away from goal and jumped to fire an overhead kick with his right foot from five yards out. The ball ricocheted to Turner’s left and went into the goal for his sixth international goal.
The U.S. had not conceded two goals inside the first 20 minutes of a game since a 2-0 loss to Guatemala in March 2016 in World Cup qualifiers.
Weah, the son of Liberian President and former FIFA World Player of the Year George Weah, scored his sixth international goal.
For the first time in U.S. history, all 11 starting players have played for clubs in England, Germany, Italy, Spain or France. In the 13 games in which a full roster can play since the 2022 World Cup, just six of the 143 starting positions have been filled by Major League Soccer players, including three of the 99 games since manager Gregg Berhalter returned.
