Colorado avalanche victim rescued after spending more than an hour trapped

The victims of a Colorado avalanche were seen being dug under the snow in a dramatic rescue filmed on video.

According to the Summit County Sheriff's Office, an individual who spent more than an hour under the snow on Bale Pass after the incident Monday afternoon escaped with only minor injuries.

“About two feet below, two feet below the snow, we found him,” the aide could hear in the bodycam video that released the rescue. “He's breathing, conscious, and talking to us.”

The footage shows the first responder shaved off a mountain of snow to reach a victim who appears to remain near the surface with the help of a snow backpack.

“We are extremely grateful for this fortunate outcome and are proud of the coordinated efforts of our lawmakers and the Summit County Rescue Team. Their dedication and skills made this rescue possible.” said the Summit County Sheriff's Office.

“We go to those rescues, but in many cases they're recovering. So it's very rare to find someone in an hour and five minutes,” he added.

Elsewhere on Monday, two backcountry skiers were killed after being trapped in an avalanche in Oregon's Cascade Mountains in the Happy Valley area west of Bend.

The victims identified in the incident – Susan Scajessaa, 52, and Terrance Scajessaa, 57, are part of the family who opened Bend's first ski shop, according to the Associated Press.

The 8-year-old snowboarder was also rescued this week after the chairlift incident at Killington ski resort in Vermont, according to the Boston Grove.
