A Colorado county official who was convicted in a pro-Trump 2020 election denial case has faced threats and assaults while in jail, according to her lawyer.

Tina Peters, 70, is currently serving a nine-year sentence for state charges in Colorado. Her lawyer, Peter Ticktin, stated that she has been assaulted by other inmates on three occasions. In a letter addressed to former President Donald Trump, who has shown notable interest in her situation, Ticktin detailed these incidents.

“About six months ago, Mrs. Peters was threatened with violence—she was stabbed and threatened with death by a group of inmates,” Ticktin reported. “This was brought to the attention of the FBI and the Department of Justice, who conducted interviews. Following this, she was moved to another unit.”

“In the new unit, she was assaulted three times in areas that required guards to step in,” the letter continued. “In truth, there is a secure ward where inmates typically do not cause issues. She applied for admission there but was denied six times without any valid reasons.”

Ticktin also emphasized that Trump has the power to pardon Peters, despite her conviction being at the state level. He argued that the interpretation of the constitutional pardon power generally limits it to federal crimes, yet he cited that the term “United States” encompasses the federal government and underscored the idea of a singular nation.

Peters was convicted by a jury for engaging in activities that compromised Mesa County’s voting system following the 2020 election. Earlier this year, she attempted to challenge her imprisonment by filing a lawsuit alleging violations of her free speech rights, though a judge dismissed this suit recently.

She stands out as the only Trump ally sentenced to prison for denying the 2020 election results and has garnered substantial backing from the former president. “Tina is an innocent political prisoner enduring unjust punishment, facing cruel conditions—this is persecution by the radical left to obscure their own election misdeeds,” Trump remarked in a social media post earlier this year. He added that Colorado should cease the unjust imprisonment of innocent Americans.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis has made it clear he will not grant Peters a pardon, emphasizing his commitment to hold her accountable under state law.
