A man from Colorado, who had been released on a $3 million bond related to his wife’s suspected murder, was taken into custody on Friday after prosecutors alleged he was involved in a hit-and-run incident that affected two other vehicles in Denver.
Barry Morphew was subsequently booked into the Boulder County Jail.
A hearing to review Morphew’s bond has been scheduled by Alamosa County District Judge Amanda Hopkins for Tuesday, according to online records.
As part of the bond conditions set last year, Morphew was prohibited from leaving his home in southern Colorado except for work and a few specified situations.
He reportedly got into the accident on August 28 while traveling to Denver International Airport, likely to pick up his daughter, as mentioned in a court filing by prosecutors.
The district attorney, Anne Kelly, noted in her filing, “Going to the airport for any purpose other than work is a violation of his bond.”
Barry Morphew’s attorneys have yet to reply to calls or emails seeking their comments on this issue.
Morphew has maintained his innocence and is scheduled for a trial next summer concerning his wife’s disappearance in 2020.
Suzanne Morphew’s skeletal remains were discovered off a rural road in southern Colorado in 2023.
At that point, charges against Barry Morphew had initially been dropped, but he was later recharged with first-degree murder in connection with his wife’s death and arrested again.
While investigators noted no visible signs of trauma in her remains, they found evidence of a drug cocktail in her bone marrow, typically used to tranquilize animals.
The prosecutors allege that Barry Morphew was the only individual in the vicinity, apart from licensed wildlife officials, who had access to the chemicals involved.
