Colorado Politician Dies While Hiking
A sudden tragedy struck in Colorado when Joe Anderson, the mayor pro tem of Englewood, collapsed during a hike on one of the state’s tallest mountains. He was just 45 years old.
Anderson experienced difficulty breathing before he lost consciousness while navigating the lower areas of Quandary Peak in Summit County. Hikers nearby quickly came to his aid and started CPR, but emergency responders, who arrived around 6:40 a.m., were ultimately unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities will determine the official cause of death through an autopsy. Quandary Peak, located about six miles south of Breckenridge, stands at 14,272 feet, making it the 11th-highest mountain in Colorado.
Before his political career, Anderson was a pastor and had been part of the Englewood City Council since 2019. He was appointed mayor pro tem in December 2023 and was re-elected the following year, with a term set to run until November 2027.
Englewood Mayor Othoniel Sierra expressed deep sorrow over Anderson’s unexpected passing. “We are all shocked and saddened at the sudden passing of our friend and council member, Joe Anderson,” he stated. “Joe was always there to lend a hand, whether it was in his role as friend, neighbor, pastor or council member.”
The loss is felt acutely in the community, with Sierra noting that it is a tremendous loss for the city. Anderson played a significant role in efforts to rebuild following severe flooding in 2018 and was instrumental in founding the nonprofit Change the Trend, which addresses homelessness.
Outgoing City Manager Shawn Lewis praised Anderson’s unique ability to motivate while offering support. He described Anderson as a constant encourager who challenged the staff to think bigger and strive for better outcomes. “He was one of the most effective, productive and positive council members I’ve ever worked with, and he was more than just a boss,” Lewis said.
Lewis recalled a personal moment when Anderson reached out to him during a difficult time, showing kindness and care that many experienced throughout his tenure on the council. The impact of Anderson’s leadership and character is sure to resonate within the community for years to come.
