Colorado Sees a Drop in Murder Rate as ICE Sends Tren de Aragua Gang Members Away

Recent statistics indicate a significant drop in murders in Denver, Colorado, and Aurora, following immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) efforts to combat the Tren de Lagua gang, which has previously caused considerable unrest in the region.

However, incidents of local Americans being killed by immigrants continue, including a tragic case involving a 24-year-old woman who lost her life in July 2024 due to a reckless driving incident involving a 15-year-old undocumented driver. Local prosecutors have been offering probation and community service options to these immigrant youths who are seeking humanitarian asylum.

Data from the Chiefs Association of Major Cities showed a sharp decline in murder rates in the first quarter of 2025. Reports from KSUA-TV revealed that murders in Denver decreased by 58% compared to the same period the previous year, while Aurora experienced a 36% reduction.

Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlin acknowledged the positive trend, stating that the city is currently in a good situation, with overall crime down by 22.8%.

The Trump administration had prioritized the Denver area for immigrant removals. Even with a change in leadership, ICE was involved in arresting 538 undocumented individuals in cities including Denver.

ICE subsequently announced an expansion of efforts in Colorado to target members of the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Lagua.

Despite these initiatives, local Democratic leaders, including Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and Colorado Governor Jared Polis, opposed the president’s immigration enforcement strategies. The Trump administration even reached out to Denver and state officials regarding perceived obstacles to federal immigration actions.
