Cadillac Formula 1 Team Welcomes Colton Herta as Test Driver
When Cadillac first announced its intention to enter the Formula 1 scene, Colton Herta, an IndyCar star, was quickly linked to the new team. Herta has had connections to F1 before, and as Cadillac aims to establish a significant presence in American motorsport, it makes sense for them to consider him.
Today marks a significant step in that direction.
Last month, Cadillac unveiled that Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas would be driving for the 2026 season. However, it was confirmed on Wednesday that Herta will also join the team as their test driver.
“I’m really excited to be part of the Cadillac Formula 1 team as a test driver. This is a dream opportunity for me—something I’ve been working toward for a long time. Being part of Cadillac’s F1 entry at such a crucial moment is something I couldn’t miss,” Herta stated.
He further expressed, “My lifelong dream has been to race in Formula 1. I believe this move is a significant step toward that goal. Right now, I’m focused on contributing everything I can to Cadillac F1 and helping build a competitive team.” Cadillac F1’s Team Principal Graeme Lowdon praised Herta as the “ideal” candidate for the role.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Colton Herta as a test driver. He’s a highly skilled racer with impressive speed and racecraft, showing maturity beyond his years. His background in top-tier American motorsports makes him a perfect fit for this role,” Lowdon remarked.
He added, “It’s a pivotal moment for American drivers to join an American Formula 1 team. Colton embodies the passion, ambition, and competitive spirit that define the Cadillac Formula 1 team.”
Recently finishing his seventh season in IndyCar, Herta ranked seventh overall. With nine wins and 16 pole positions, he has led over 1,000 laps across 116 career IndyCar starts.
Before he can officially join the F1 grid, Herta needs to acquire sufficient points for the FIA Super License. He currently falls just five points short of the required 40 points. While participating in F1 practice sessions could help him close that gap, there are reports suggesting that he may still consider a seat in F2 next season. Competing in F2 would present him with a good opportunity to earn the points necessary for his Super License.
This could enhance his chances of joining Cadillac’s F1 team by 2027.
While Bottas and Perez are confirmed for the 2026 season, it’s evident that Cadillac will likely seek younger drivers for its second campaign on the grid—possibly for at least one spot.
Now, Herta seems to be weighing his options for that future possibility.
