Indianapolis Colts star running back Jonathan Taylor was among the players who wore the Guardians cap during the team’s preseason game against the Denver Broncos.
Taylor, Xavier Scott, Kylen Granson, Rodney Thomas II and Grant Stuard decided to wear the Guardian Caps – protective headgear worn around the helmet to prevent head injuries – in Sunday’s game after the NFL approved them for players to wear in regular-season games several months ago.

“We have two years of data showing a significant reduction in concussions among players who wear the Guardian Cap during practice, so players will be permitted to wear the Guardian Cap during games this season,” Jeff Miller, the NFL’s executive vice president overseeing player health and safety, said in an April statement.
“In addition, new helmets will be introduced this year that offer equal or even greater protection than other helmet models paired with the Guardian Cap. These developments represent major progress in our efforts to make the game safer for players.”

The Guardian Caps were introduced during training camp prior to the start of the 2022 season and are now mandatory for preseason practices in 2023, as well as regular season and playoff practices that involve contact.
Only quarterbacks, wide receivers, defensive backs, kickers and punters are not required to wear protective equipment.
