Columbia Should Have Made the Fixes Trump Wanted Years Ago, But Trump’s an ‘Extortionist’

On Friday's “PBS Newshour” New York Times Columnist David Brooks said the conditions under the Trump administration for Columbia University to maintain federal funding were “a kind of rationality, and Columbia should have done all of this five or ten years ago. They really got ideologically out of control.” But President Donald Trump is a “terrifying person” and higher education needs to say “there is no better deal.” And then, “Everyone will have time to stand up together and say, no, there's no more deal.”

Brooks said, “In Columbia, Trump personally believes that whatever it is, it's kind of a demand or a demand that is reasonable and that Columbia should have done all this five or ten years ago.

He continued. “On the other hand, I rarely fall into a scary person because he says the next demand is my next demand. Here is my next demand. And if you look at Zelensky, Macron, people's history, and if you look at the history of people who are comfortable with everyone, [they] Everything ends up losing. So I don't think we'll make any more deals by saying that it's when the university as a university and then saw this with President Princeton. We're up, because we have time – and again, I don't think this is time to beat the Trump administration – there are times when everyone has to stand up together and say a more deal, no, more. ”
