Columbus, Ohio Faces Backlash Over Somali Flag Post
The city of Columbus, Ohio, known for its significant Somali population, is under scrutiny after a social media post celebrating the raising of the Somali flag was removed.
“Happy Somalia Independence Day!” was the message shared by the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department on Wednesday. The post mentioned that the flag would be raised at City Hall in recognition of the unification of the Somaliland Trust Territory and Somaliland State into the Republic of Somalia back in 1960.
This announcement quickly drew criticism, particularly from conservative circles. Many questioned why Columbus was commending Somalia’s independence so enthusiastically, especially with the upcoming celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller commented, “Columbus, Ohio raises Somali flag for America 250,” prompting further discussion.
Notably, journalist Mark Hemingway stated, “Another country’s flag should never be flown on U.S. government buildings.” He added a simple, contemplative “Hmm.” Meanwhile, lawyer and political commentator Mehek Kuk expressed her disapproval, saying, “City Hall is not a foreign embassy. As an Ohioan, I am disappointed by this display. Our leaders seem to hold foreign nationalism in higher regard than American patriotism.”
ACT for America founder Brigitte Gabriel reacted strongly as well, asserting, “This is America, not Little Somalia. Raising the Somali flag at City Hall isn’t a celebration; it’s a cultural surrender. We need to remove that flag.”
Others chimed in, with Federalist reporter Brianna Lyman questioning why Columbus would celebrate Somali unification while the nation marks 250 years of its own history. She suggested that those who appreciate their homeland should simply return there.
Rep. Brian Stewart, R-Ohio, voiced a similar sentiment, arguing that celebrating Somalia’s independence, especially given its issues, was misguided and counterproductive to assimilation efforts.
After Fox News Digital reached out for a comment, the Department of Recreation and Parks deleted the post. A city spokesperson later clarified, stating, “A social media post by city officials inaccurately portrayed that City Hall would be displaying the Somali flag in honor of Somalia’s Independence Day. While the city acknowledges the desire for people worldwide to live freely, this post was removed due to inaccuracies.”
