Comcast Plans Major Layoffs Ahead of NBCUniversal Spin-off
Cable giant Comcast is gearing up for substantial layoffs as it prepares to spin off NBCUniversal, which is scheduled for 2027.
During the third-quarter earnings call for 2026, CFO Jason Armstrong informed investors that the company is initiating a significant restructuring plan, estimating a cost of approximately $1 billion in the upcoming fourth quarter, as reported.
Armstrong noted, “We expect to have a significant charge in the fourth quarter related mostly to our transformation efforts, and I would quantify that at over $1 billion.” This move aligns with the plans for the tax-free separation of NBCUniversal.
The exact number of job losses affecting the company’s 179,000 employees remains uncertain. Various departments within Comcast are only beginning to evaluate where reductions may be most effective.
He further explained that the restructuring is aimed at preemptively addressing cost issues to ensure a strong start for 2027, helping the company stay “competitive.”
“We don’t look at it as a cost-cutting exercise. This is the ability to simplify in order to move faster, to be more nimble in decision-making, and I think really create capacity, you know, to invest for growth,” he added.
The company has seen significant declines in cable subscribers as the entertainment landscape undergoes major shifts, with consumers increasingly changing how they access content.
For the third quarter, Comcast’s cable sector fell by 2.7%, totaling $19.66 billion, while NBCU’s revenue from TV, film, and theme park operations experienced a growth of 6.5%, reaching $10.54 billion.
“While there is still significant work ahead, we have a clear path to completion [of the NBCU/Sky spin-off] and remain focused on creating two companies with the strategic flexibility, financial strength and leadership to compete and grow independently,” co-CEO Mike Cavanagh stated. “And we have tremendous confidence in the future of both companies. Each has significant structural advantages, a strong competitive position, and substantial opportunities for long-term growth and value creation.”
