Comcast provides generous donation for White House ballroom while encountering US obstacles in potential merger efforts: sources

Comcast is facing increased scrutiny from the Trump administration regarding its potential acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. Recently, it’s emerged that Comcast has made significant donations—reportedly between $5 million and $10 million—to support the president’s “state banquet hall project,” although the exact figure remains unverified.

A spokesperson for Comcast refrained from commenting, and a White House press secretary also had no remarks on the matter.

This renovation project, particularly the construction of what many consider extravagant features like a 90,000-square-foot ballroom, has become contentious. According to various sources, Comcast might have a reason to maintain a favorable relationship with Trump, given the challenges posed by regulatory opposition to its acquisition plans.

Concerns about antitrust issues are not the only hurdle. Some reports suggest that Trump holds a personal grudge against Comcast due to its ownership of MSNBC, which has often been critical of him and his administration. “It seems unlikely that [Comcast CEO] Brian Roberts will have success expanding with something like CNN,” noted a government official aware of the dynamics. There’s a sentiment that even if Comcast tried to smooth things over with Trump, it might not yield positive results.

In the backdrop, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, believes he can make a case to the administration for allowing companies like Comcast and Netflix to collaborate while sidelining Paramount Skydance. Comcast is expected to present arguments to support its bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery after announcing plans to spin off MSNBC.

The renovation of the White House is certainly pricey, with expectations that it will cost a substantial amount to enhance its aesthetics. Reports suggest that there’s a frontrunner in the bidding for Warner Bros. Discovery—Paramount Skydance. David Ellison, its CEO and a close ally of Trump, is seen as having an edge due to his history with presidential administrations.

Trump administration insiders point to Ellison’s previous dealings with the government as a significant factor in the ongoing negotiations. Recently, Zaslav initiated a bidding process for WBD that could reach up to $80 billion. Circling back, it’s noted that Zaslav has turned down three separate bids from Ellison, the last being at $23.50 per share.

As the situation develops, there are whispers of Ellison potentially executing a hostile takeover, appealing to shareholders to support his ambitions of acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery.
