Dave Smith Critiques Trump’s Presidency Over Iran Conflict
Comedian Dave Smith expressed on Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s approach to Iran has effectively “destroyed” the presidency. He highlighted that the ongoing situation has fragmented Trump’s support base for the upcoming 2024 election, predicting that Democrats could regain control in the 2026 midterms. Furthermore, he was doubtful about any strong candidate emerging from the current administration for the 2028 presidential race.
Smith stated during an appearance on Piers Morgan’s show, “This is going to jeopardize Donald Trump’s presidency. We’re already past that point. Democrats will win the House and the Senate. There will be impeachments and subpoenas. I don’t think anyone in this administration can beat the president.”
Trump initially campaigned on an America First platform, promising no new wars during his presidency. However, a recent poll indicated that many Americans, including those from the University of Maryland, are against U.S. involvement in the Iran conflict. The results revealed that 49% of participants opposed the war while only 21% were in favor. Another CBS News/YouGov poll found that 57% perceived the war as going “somewhat” or “very bad,” whereas 43% felt it was “very” or “somewhat” successful.
Smith cautioned that the ongoing conflict could become a significant disaster for Trump, potentially alienating his core supporters even further. He mentioned, “If this doesn’t turn out to be any kind of victory and looks to be a disaster, as it seems now, that will hurt him more.” He acknowledged his perspective wouldn’t necessarily align with political commentary norms, but he felt compelled to share his views.
Reflecting on a past brief conflict, Smith pointed out the lack of acknowledgment online regarding the warnings of potential fallout, which he and others had voiced during that time.
The ongoing blockade by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz has led to rising global energy prices, with gasoline prices projected to approach $4 a gallon. Many voters who supported Trump in 2024 prioritized economic issues and immigration, especially in light of inflation trends under the previous administration.
Notably, Joe Kent, the former director of the National Counterterrorism Center, recently resigned, citing concerns over Israel’s influence on Trump’s military decisions regarding Iran. His farewell remarks garnered a standing ovation during his first public appearance since stepping down.
