Comedian John Mulaney expresses confusion over the political backlash and death threats directed at his wife, actress Olivia Munn.
Mulaney believes that his wife’s “innocent comments” regarding Rachel Griffin’s children’s programming have been misinterpreted. He emphasized that Munn was not commenting on Griffin’s political stance but was simply sharing her thoughts on children’s shows.
“My wife, Olivia Munn, has spoken about what our favorite children’s program is doing, yet she’s been misunderstood as being indifferent to the suffering of children in Gaza,” Mulaney stated on Instagram, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.
“Because of this, my wife and our two kids are receiving violent threats and messages, which is completely unacceptable and must stop,” he added.
Munn’s comments were taken out of context by certain pro-Palestinian activists following an interview in which she discussed children’s shows (including Rachel) and how she limits her children’s exposure to them.
She later removed the interview from the website.
In the interview, Munn expressed that a YouTube channel catering to kids causes her stress, specifically mentioning a segment from Accurso’s show.
“I know I love my kids. [Ms. Rachel], but honestly, if I can’t stand it, I won’t let it drive me crazy,” Munn shared. “Malcolm asked for Blue’s Clues, and I have no idea who introduced him to it, but they’re on my bad list now. I said, ‘Absolutely not in my house.’”
Munn hinted at no political commentary regarding Accurso, yet some supporters of Rachel interpreted it as an indifference to the plight of children in Gaza.
The actress later took to clarify her remarks.
“To Rachel and her supporters, I appreciate the passion behind your allegiance. I didn’t foresee such distortion in the media from my casual comments,” she wrote. “I aimed not to diminish the joy and comfort she provides to many families. Parents completely understand the importance of connecting through thoughtful programming.”
Accurso also weighed in, criticizing the media for amplifying the controversy.
“Who cares?!” she expressed on social media. “I’d rather advocate for the immediate needs of children in Gaza who are suffering immensely due to historical injustices.”
She added, “It’s alright if you don’t want to see her show.”
