Comedian Nate Bargatze discusses his Christian inspiration

Stand-up comedy star Nate Bargatze recently opened up about how significant his Christian faith is to him. In an interview with Esquire, he discussed the influence of faith on his life and his comedy.

“It’s definitely grounding, and I feel it’s important to be around,” he shared, mentioning he tries to attend church whenever he’s back home from touring.

Bargatze, who currently ranks as one of the top comics on the Billboard list, often reflects on his Christian upbringing in a lighthearted manner, steering clear of the harsher tones some comedians adopt when addressing religion. One of the jokes from his recent Amazon Prime special, “Hello, World,” highlights this as he notes, “I had Christian parents from the 80s and 90s – which is probably the peak of Christian parenting! I think Jesus maybe had more fun than I did.”

Additionally, he reminisced about his strict upbringing, recalling how he was restricted from watching “The Simpsons,” and described his parents as very firm and traditional.

In another interview, Bargatze commented on how his background shaped the clean, family-friendly style of his comedy. “I definitely grew up in a way that made me cautious. I always feel like I don’t want to let my parents down,” he explained.

He reflected on the idea that he simply can’t imagine using curse words in front of his parents, even now at 43. “I think it influences how I write,” he noted. “I aim to make my parents laugh.” Since 2019, he has also been sober. He shared that he cut out alcohol, believing it was hindering his professional growth. “I realized it was just in the way,” he stated.
