Gillis' antics during Gillis' appearance at the Notre Dame vs. Indiana University football playoff game on December 20 were unpopular with Saban.

Saban fired back at Gillis, and he was certainly serious.
“I believe in integrity, and I've always tried to run my program that way to give our players a better chance to succeed in life,” Saban said. “We make more money in the NFL than any other school, and we have 61 players in the league. That's how we cheated. That's how we developed players.”
After the cameras stopped, Gillis said Saban was actually upset after McAfee and Herbstreit said they were going to talk to Saban.
“So I went to him afterwards and he said, 'You think the SEC has an advantage just because we cheated? That's bullish– “He spat at me,'' Gillis said.
