Hugh Laurie Takes Stand Against Biological Males in Women’s Sports

Hugh Laurie, a Golden Globe winner, recently expressed his opposition to biological males competing in women’s sports, showing his support for WNBA player Sophie Cunningham.

This discussion unfolded during a conversation with comedian Graham Linehan, who sought clarification after Laurie shared a critical viewpoint on X regarding the height advantage in professional basketball.

Linehan, in a now-deleted post, criticized Laurie’s indirect remarks as “cowardly” and pushed him for a more straightforward stance.

Laurie, famously known for his role as Dr. Gregory House, made his opinion clear: “First of all, don’t do that. Second of all, no, I don’t think men should compete with women. I meant to say that clearly, if you look at it. But obviously I have to move on to the next thing.”

Linehan pressed Laurie to “stop trying to be Archie” and directly support Sophie Cunningham in her fight for fair competition. In response, Laurie said, “You started it. There’s a ‘sneaky’ to ‘off’ exchange going on around here. And yes, I support Sophie Cunningham. And sometimes you too.”

Following the exchange, Linehan later apologized for his initial reaction, admitting, “Of course. I apologize for taking a knee. And I thank you. I never would have had a career like this if I hadn’t aimed for the ‘Fry and Rowley bit.'”

The conversation quickly garnered viral attention, with millions viewing it as users debated Laurie’s position. Reactions varied; some criticized him for opposing transgender athletes in women’s sports, while others commended him for his backing of women’s sports.

Political commentator Tim Young noted that it’s unusual for someone in Hollywood to advocate for women in sports and implied that Laurie’s established career allows him the freedom to express such views without fear of backlash. “It’s exciting to see someone stand up at this moment,” he stated.

Young further explained that financial implications can sway performers’ public opinions: “Comedians have always been at the forefront of social commentary, but a lot of their opinions come from the side of the payers. Here we see someone as established as Laurie going up against someone who is afraid of being cancelled.” He added that Laurie was right this time and humorously referred to him as his favorite doctor on TV.

The topic of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports has seen a resurgence, particularly in discussions surrounding the WNBA. Recently, Sophie Cunningham voiced concerns about the fairness of such competitions.
