House Hearing to Address Online Extremism Following Shooting
James Comer, the Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, has invited the heads of Discord, Reddit, Twitch, and Steam to testify next month. This follows the tragic shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The upcoming hearing is set to explore the “radicalization of online forum users, including instances of incitement to politically motivated actions,” according to the committee’s announcement on Wednesday.
Comer reached out to the CEOs of Discord, Reddit, Twitch, and Valve Corporation on the same day, requesting their presence at the hearing scheduled for October 8.
In a statement, Comer expressed that “Charlie Kirk’s politically motivated assassination took the life of a husband, father, and an American patriot.” He emphasized that, after such tragedies and other acts of politically motivated violence, Congress must oversee the online platforms that extremists have leveraged to encourage violence.
He further asserted, “To prevent future radicalization and violence, the leaders of Discord, Steam, Twitch, and Reddit need to explain what measures they will take to prevent their platforms from being misused for harmful purposes.”
The Hill also reached out to the four companies for their responses.
Kirk was fatally shot while addressing an audience at Utah Valley University last week. Authorities are pursuing the death penalty against 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, the suspected shooter.
Earlier reports from the Washington Post suggested that Robinson may have confessed to the crime in a Discord chat just hours before being arrested by the FBI.
In the chat, Robinson reportedly said, “Hey guys, I have bad news for you. It was me at Utah Valley University yesterday. Sorry for all of this.”
According to the Post, Discord provided authorities with this message but stated that their internal investigation found “no evidence that the suspect had planned the act or that it promoted violence on Discord.”
During congressional testimony, FBI Director Kash Patel indicated that the agency is looking into all individuals involved in that Discord chat.
Additionally, reports from the New York Times noted that Robinson claimed in another chat that a “doppelganger” was “trying to get me in trouble” because of a physical resemblance to someone depicted in a police photo of a wanted shooter.
The Times highlighted that there were around 20 users in that chat. However, Patel mentioned that the FBI is pursuing a larger number than just the 20 users and is actively investigating all related individuals.
