Sen. Ron Johnson Criticizes Fauci as ‘Grossly Dishonest’
Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) has taken aim at Dr. Anthony Fauci, labeling him a “megalomaniac” and a “notorious villain.” This criticism follows the publication of Fauci’s personal diary, in which Johnson asserts that Fauci knowingly funded gain-of-function research, made contradictory statements about the origins of COVID-19, favored experimental vaccines over early treatment methods, and imposed detrimental lockdown measures.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) has also spoken out, cautioning that Fauci’s presidential pardon has its limits prior to Fauci’s significant appearance on Capitol Hill. Fauci is set to testify before a Senate committee led by Republicans on Wednesday, days after extensive excerpts from his pandemic diary came to light.
“Now we see the reason behind President Biden granting Dr. Fauci a full pardon. Fauci is fixated on his reputation, has not been forthcoming with the public regarding the origins of the coronavirus, and has recommended school closures,” Comer remarked.
He continued, stating, “The repercussions of Fauci’s decisions are still affecting Americans. Biden’s pardon won’t protect Fauci during his testimony this week, and if he persists in lying, he must face consequences.”
Fauci received this contentious “preemptive pardon” from former President Joe Biden during the last hours of his administration. This pardon covers any crimes committed from January 1, 2014, until it was issued, particularly concerning his role as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and as chief medical advisor on COVID-19.
There’s considerable discussion about whether the pardon will shield Fauci from liability stemming from his upcoming testimony. Other House Republicans, including doctors who co-chair the House Republican Physicians Group, have criticized Fauci for actions that they say have hurt public trust in health care.
“Dr. Fauci’s obsession with fame overshadowed scientific integrity during the pandemic,” stated Rep. Greg Murphy, RN.C. “This has led to a significant loss of trust in American healthcare that will take generations to repair.” He described the situation as a clear instance where ego has undone prior achievements.
Rep. John Joyce (R-Pennsylvania) echoed these sentiments, asserting that both the House and Senate must hold Fauci accountable. “Dr. Fauci’s diary supports what many Americans have suspected: he wasn’t honest about COVID-19’s origins. His preoccupation with self-image and power has undermined trust in our public health institutions and failed the American people,” he added.
A diary entry, now public and shared by Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.), shows Fauci reflecting on his prominence during the pandemic, with some entries seemingly taking credit for policies like school closures, which sparked considerable debate regarding the government’s response to COVID-19. Yet, he insisted to the House Oversight Committee in January 2024, “I did not close schools.”
Throughout this controversy, Fauci has consistently denied any wrongdoing, claiming he is being politically targeted by critics on the right concerning the government’s pandemic response.
