Tragic Drowning Incident in Louisiana

A grandfather in Louisiana drowned while attempting to save his grandson from a lake, as reported by various sources. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed the incident in Bayou Lacombe.

Family members identified the man as Chris Rushing. According to reports, he jumped into the water after the girl fell in, but she struggled to stay afloat, prompting him to act quickly. Fortunately, a woman also jumped in and managed to pull the girl to safety.

The authorities were alerted around 7:43 p.m. last Wednesday. Initial rescue efforts were made by five swimmers available on site. Tragically, Rushing was later found and life-saving attempts were initiated right away. Despite these efforts, he was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. His remains have been sent to the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office, which is currently conducting an autopsy.

The sheriff’s office has indicated that Rushing’s death is likely an accidental drowning. Rushing worked for the City of Covington’s Department of Cultural Arts and Events. Sarada Bonnet, the executive director of the department, expressed her sadness, stating, “How can we make this better? He will be missed.”

In a heartfelt Facebook post, Bonnet shared the grief felt by the department: “The loss of our teammate and friend has been one of the hardest experiences we’ve faced. There are no words to express the void he left in our lives.”

City Councilman Jimmy Inman also commented on Rushing’s character, calling him a hero. Inman said, “Chris was focused on making the world a better place. He gave his life to help people in dire need.” He reflected on how Rushing had significantly contributed to improving Covington and noted that his legacy will endure.

The Mayor of Covington, Mark Johnson, emphasized how Rushing will be remembered for his positivity and eagerness to help others, adding that accepting his loss is very challenging.

A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to support Rushing’s family. It notes that he was admired by all who met him and expresses a desire to continue his legacy of helping others.

While the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office and Sheriff’s Office have yet to respond to requests for further comments, this incident has left an indelible mark on the community.
